What Is a Text QR Code?

A text QR code is the simplest type of QR code. It encodes plain text — no URL, no link, no special format. When someone scans it, the text is displayed on their phone screen. That is it.

No internet connection is needed. No server is contacted. The text is stored entirely in the QR code pattern itself. This makes text QR codes the most reliable and private type — they work everywhere, even in airplane mode.

When to Use Text Instead of a URL

Most QR codes link to a website. But sometimes plain text is the better choice:

How to Create a Text QR Code

  1. Open the QR code designer and select Text as the content type
  2. Type or paste your text
  3. Customize the design — choose from 45+ artistic styles, pick colors, add your logo
  4. Download as SVG (for print) or PNG (for digital)

Keep the text concise. Every character increases the QR code density. Under 300 characters scans reliably at small sizes.

How Much Text Fits in a QR Code?

QR codes have a maximum capacity that depends on the error correction level:

Error CorrectionMax Characters
Low (L)~4,296
Medium (M)~3,391
Quartile (Q)~2,420
High (H)~1,852

But the theoretical maximum is not the practical limit. More characters means a denser code with more modules, which:

Practical recommendation: keep text under 300 characters for a QR code that scans reliably at 2cm × 2cm. Under 100 characters for business card-sized codes.

Text QR Code vs. URL QR Code

Rule of thumb: if the information fits in a tweet and will not change, use text. If it needs formatting, images, or updates, use a URL.

Tips for Better Text QR Codes

Shorter is better. Every character counts. “WiFi: MyNetwork / Pass: abc123” is better than a paragraph explaining how to connect.

Use line breaks intentionally. Most phones display the text as-is, including line breaks. Structure your text so it reads well on a small screen.

Consider the language. QR codes support UTF-8, so any language works — Chinese, Arabic, emoji. But non-ASCII characters take more bytes per character, reducing the total capacity.

Test at print size. Dense QR codes with long text need to be printed larger. Always test scanning at the actual print size before ordering a batch.

Frequently Asked Questions

? What is a text QR code?

A QR code that contains plain text. When scanned, the text is displayed on screen — no internet connection needed.

? Is this text QR code generator free?

Yes, completely free. No account needed, no watermark, unlimited downloads.

? Do text QR codes expire?

No. Static QR codes never expire. The text is embedded directly in the pattern and works forever — even offline.

? How much text can a QR code hold?

Up to about 4,296 characters in theory, but for reliable scanning keep it under 300 characters. Shorter text produces simpler, faster-scanning codes.

? Does scanning a text QR code need internet?

No. The text is stored entirely in the QR code pattern. It works offline — no server, no connection needed.

? Does it work on both iPhone and Android?

Yes. Both platforms display the text when scanned. Some camera apps show it inline, others open it in a notification.
